Martins Point School House
Built in 1886, the Martins Point School served the local area until the early 1960s. The school house was originally a two classroom structure with several grades taught in each room. In the winter the classrooms were heated with a pot-bellied wood stove and there was a sturdy outdoor privy at the back with one side for boys, and the other for the girls.
Converted to a community centre and then a popular fish and chip restaurant, the School has been restored to much of its original 1886 state, including the original blackboard where you see our specials listed. There are even two old school desks and some well-used textbooks from the building’s early days as well as a collection of restored photos of students and teachers from the last century.
The Union Jack still hangs in the corner much as it would have in the early days of the School when a young Canada was a proud member of the British Empire under Her Royal Majesty, Queen Victoria.
